Would You Walk A Tightrope Without A Safety Net?

Scary thought right? Walking across a rope with nothing to catch you if you fall. It is all about risk; right? The risk you could lose your balance and end up a spot on the floor. Not a pretty image is it? You would want that net in place to ensure your safety. You would want to know everything will be alright if you fall screaming from the sky.

Makes sense doesn’t it? Consider another question. If you or your spouse were to die, what would your family have as a financial safety net? Would they suffer financially as well as emotionally? How would the bills get paid? Would your family have to drastically change their lifestyle?

According to a “2014 Insurance Barometer Study, Life Happens and LIMRA” 31% of those taking part in the study say they would feel the financial impact from the death of the primary wage earner in one month. The study further uncovered that almost half of adults age 25 – 44 are concerned with leaving dependents in a difficult financial situation should they die prematurely. And a third of people wish their spouse or partner had life insurance – or more of it.

This brings us to why? Why do families all across the United States fail to have even a basic safety net? The Life Happens and LIMRA study explored why families delay buying life coverage. The reasons are broken into two categories, first is cost, second priorities and procrastination. Let’s look at cost.

According to the study:

  • 80% of Americans overestimate the cost of life coverage
  • People with no life insurance overestimate the cost by more than 3x and those with coverage by more than 2x
  • Those under 25 think the cost of life coverage is almost 10x its true cost

Cost is certainly a factor for families who are considering insurance however, and even though they realize coverage is needed, many never get around to discussing their needs and cost with an insurance professional. If you have never discussed life with an agent, consider doing so before deciding insurance is out of your budget. When you consider the financial security owning life insurance would provide for your family, isn’t it worth exploring?

Life is full of distractions. We often put off till tomorrow what we should do today. We fail to see the long term impact of kicking the can down the road so to speak. Buying insurance is often set aside in favor of other priorities. The study found that:

  • 59% haven’t bought life insurance or more of it because they have “other financial priorities”
  • 52% put expenses such as cable or cell phone ahead of buying life insurance
  • 30% haven’t bought life insurance or more of it because they “haven’t gotten around to it”

Who benefits from the proceeds of life insurance? Life coverage is not for the dead, it is for the living. Owning life insurance will provide money when it’s needed most – at the death of a wage earner. The death benefit provided by life insurance can enable your family to remain financially sound. This means; staying in their home, attending the same school, providing money for college and replacing lost income. All things you would have provided for your family had you lived.

Is life insurance right for you and your family? Only you can answer that question.

First find an insurance professional. Meet with them and discuss what financial needs your family would have in the event of your death. Be sure to work with an insurance professional you feel you can trust. If you get an uneasy feeling in your gut after a conversation, move on to the next professional. There is no shortage of insurance professionals where you live.

What’s important is you take action. Waiting to buy life insurance can be costly. A change in health could mean higher cost or in some cases coverage not available. Because we do not know when death will occur, dying without life insurance could leave your loved-ones in a serious financial bind. These critical money issues could be avoided simply by owning adequate life insurance.

Life insurance plays a significant role in a family’s overall financial picture. Though there is cost involved in owning life insurance coverage, the piece of mind and financial stability it provides can be invaluable to your family if life does not go as planned.

A life insurance professional can help you determine if you have a need. They can assist you in finding a plan to address that need. However, the choice is yours whether to own life insurance, or not. Only you can make that important financial decision.

DID Numbers: All The Stats, Facts And Data You’ll Ever Need To Know

DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing. This is a service that local phone companies offer to block of telephone numbers to call into one company. Companies will in normal circumstances have PBX, Private Branch Exchange systems. Using DID numbers, any company manages to offer customer phone numbers for every person or workstation within the company without necessarily requiring physical lines into PBX for every single connection. DID numbers can also be used for voice mail and fax and the live voice connections. They come with cost effectiveness compared to the regular PBX services.

The Background Of DID

Most companies and businesses have several incoming telephone numbers for different purposes. They can be for sales and customer service among others. To keep up with the demands, each user in the company requires an individual telephone number within the system. With so many telephone numbers, it is not practical to have different wire pairs. Direct inward dialing systems were created to reuse limited numbers of the physical phone lines to make it easier to handle calls to different published numbers. The phone service provider uses DID signaling to make it easy to identify the numbers waiting to be connected to PBX. Digital methods are now in place to make this easier to do even though most companies still work with PBX systems.

DID and VOIP numbers

Phone services can also be offered over broadband which is where the VOIP numbers come into the picture. In the new VOIP world, DID numbers are still saving the day for many businesses. Phone service providers offering the service over IP addresses will need to purchase DID numbers. Local telephone numbers and virtual phone numbers thereby still make use of DID which is much more effective.

The Benefits of DID Numbers

The most prominent DID benefit is that any person gets a chance to call a phone number or extension to connect to recipients without the need to go through an operator or a switchboard.

The company also enjoys the benefit of not having to purchase phone lines that are bulk in the name of handling all incoming calls. They have eliminated the need to have multiple physical lines for phones.

One DID number can route and process thousands of calls simultaneously to the right extensions. This is something that was not possible to enjoy before. Unlimited number of extensions within a company can have calls routed maintaining only one DID number.

To have a DID number that is active, you are required to have a working transfer line. The transfer line is where the incoming calls will be forwarded to. Different companies are now offering the technology and the phone line used can be a cell phone number, virtual phone number or a landline depending on the preferences. The numbers have undoubtedly made work easier for all companies in terms of cost and customer service improvements.

Women@Work Series – Understanding And Avoiding Burnout

A couple of months ago, I literally fell apart. In addition to a full-time job, a Masters’ dissertation to write, two consulting projects and a board position in an international youth organisation, which involved regular travel, I had also had a home to manage and a husband to love. However, I was failing at almost everything. Although my health was fine, I felt worn out all the time, and generally was feeling dissatisfied and disinterested. For me, this was quite strange since I am typically a high- energy person with multiple interests so I wasn’t quite sure what I was experiencing. As I researched; I came across a startling reality that working women like me are experiencing the same thing. So, today, I’m dedicating this piece to understanding and combatting the condition best known as: “burnout”.

Did you know that a growing number of working women who seem to “have it all” are burning out at work before they reach the age of forty? The American Psychological Association’s David Ballard, describes job burnout as “an extended period of time where someone experiences exhaustion and a lack of interest in things, resulting in a decline in their job performance.” Burnout often happens when we are worn out or exhausted, especially as a result of long-term stress.

According to research conducted by the Captivate Network, working men are twenty-five percent more likely to take breaks throughout the day for personal activities; seven per cent more likely to take a walk, five per cent more likely to go out to lunch, and thirty-five per cent more likely to take breaks “just to relax”. Women, on the other hand, often postpone relaxation in order to look after the needs of others (Bosses, spouses, children, family members etc.) The result is that numerous working women are experiencing the damaging symptoms of burnout, which can manifest itself as loss of focus, lowered productivity or extreme irritability.

According to psychologists, burnout is generally characterised by three primary states:

• Emotional exhaustion: Feelings of being unable to give any more to your business or relationships.

• Depersonalization: Developing a negative, cynical, and sometimes callous attitude towards your work, clients, family or significant others.

• Diminished Personal Accomplishment: Feelings of ineffectiveness or unmotivated to complete business tasks or other responsibilities.

Besides feelings of excessive stress, burnout can ruin personal relationships and cause fatigue, insomnia, depression and anxiety. So, how exactly can working women fight the effects of fatigue and burnout?

Give yourself a regular break
Renowned wellness coach Gayle Arnold advises: “One of the best ways to combat burnout is to take a weekend break or a mini-vacation often. Make it imperative. “Ultimately, burnout can be avoided when you take care to create a lifestyle that allows you the time to take care of yourself.

Don’t be afraid to take your leave/vacation days According to a recent study, forty-eight per cent of workers felt happier and more positive about their workplaces after taking a vacation. Since feeling cynical about your office is one of the key causes of burnout, taking a vacation is an easy way to keep yourself interested and engaged at work.

Ask for help
Avoid the “Superwoman” syndrome and enlist the help of colleagues, spouses, and family members, for example, to help you get through your daily to-do list.

Book Reviews: How Should Someone Respond When Other People Leave Negative Book Reviews?

Once someone has read a book, they can to leave a review on a popular website, and this can take place even if they have bought the book offline. In addition to this, they can also leave a review if they bought the book on another site.

However, even though one has the opportunity to do this, it doesn’t mean that they will. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t enjoy the book; it could simply come down to the fact that they can’t be bothered.

Other Priorities

For example, when one has read the book, they could end up moving onto the next one. Or, they could have other things that consume their attention, and this could show that they don’t even think about leaving one.

If they enjoyed reading the book, they might not feel the need to do anything else; it is then going to be as if they have got what they need and that’s all there is to it. But even if they didn’t enjoy reading it, they could still move on.

This could be different if one reads a lot of books and their friends are also the same. In this case, they could talk to them about what they thought of it, and one could tell them to read it if they enjoyed it.

Yet, if they didn’t enjoy it, they could still recommend it, and this can show that they don’t believe that their view is the only view. Alternatively, they could say that it’s not a good book and that they shouldn’t waste their time with it.

If one was to read a book and they felt the need to leave a review, it could be sad that there is a strong chance that it wasn’t what they expected. There could be a number of things that they didn’t like about it.

Having said that, it could be far worse than this, and one could wonder why it was ever published. This is then similar to how people are more likely to talk about a bad meal than a good one.

It is said that human beings are programmed to focus on negativity, and this is seen as something that would have kept them alive in the past. As if one was to focus on the positive, their life might improve, but if they avoided the negative, they could die.

Times have now changed and it is no longer necessary to behave in his way, however, the brain is still responding to how life used to be. Therefore, if one was to read a book and it blew them away, for instance, it is not going to have the same effect as it would if it didn’t meet their expectations.

Out of Balance

Based on this, it could be said that it can be a challenge to understand how good a book is simply by looking through what people have said. With this in mind, one could miss out on a good book if they were to purely listen to what other people have said.

But if they were to allow other people to decide for them, it could be said that this will also be a result of evolution. Many, many years ago, doing what other people did would have also increased their chances of survival.

A Reaction

During this time, if one was to see a lot of people running and they were to think about what is going on, they could end up being eaten alive. It would have been in their best interest to do what other people were doing.

Going along with others would have been the best thing to do; whereas if would have been a risk for people to come to their own conclusions. Nowadays, even though it is generally in one’s best interest to think for themselves, it can be easier to follow the crowd.

Taking the Plunge

If one was to buy a book even though the reviews were not all positive, they could be in for a pleasant surprise. They could find it hard to understand why other people didn’t have the same outlook.

At the same time, they could read a book that has only received positive reviews and end up feeling disappointed. In the first example, they would have used their own brain and, in the second example, they would have put it to one side.

Another Position

If one was to reflect on this, they might see that it shows how they can’t always trust what other people say. When it comes to someone who has written a book (or a number of them), they could end up experiencing a negative reaction if another person was to leave a negative review.

What they could do here is to step back from how they feel and to look into what has been said. At this time, they could think about how this only going to be the other persons opinion.

A Subjective Experience

Ultimately, no matter what their book is like, it is not going to be possible for everyone to like it. When they read their book, there is the chance that this person was comparing it to another one they had read.

This can then mean that it doesn’t match up with this book, and this can be a book that also has negative reviews. If they have left a really bad review, it can be a sign that they are not currently in a good place themselves.

While one can be affected by what has been said, they might not respond in this way if they knew who wrote it. For example, if an athlete had just performed at their best and another person who had no idea what they were talking about said it was rubbish, there would be no reason for them to take it seriously.

One can see if there is anything positive to take from it, and if there isn’t, they can ignore it; what matters is that they don’t allow a negative review to hold them back. And if they don’t write to please others, it will be easier for them to keep going.

Is the Constitution Dead for US Citizens Labeled As a Sex Offender?

The US Constitution, with the Bill of Rights, is supposed to protect life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness to ALL its citizens. However, for a certain section of the US citizenry, namely those labeled as registered sex offenders, any such rights become largely absent, with more restrictive laws being passed locally, statewide, and nationally. These people have served their time in incarceration and paid their restitution, and yet they are subjected to harsher social ostracism for decades, even for life in several states.

Let us look at how far the United States has come with the gradual chipping away of the Constitutional rights for the people labeled as sex offenders.

1st Amendment – In certain state/s, like North Carolina, it is illegal for anyone registered as a sex offender to visit social websites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. Such laws further isolate these people from their family and friends who live away from them.

These people are required to disclose their identity in a church or religious places where they attend. This creates an environment of suspicion and discomfort for everyone. Moreover, such requirements infringe upon a person’s right to practice a religion freely and peaceably.

It is generally illegal for them to assemble with each other. Such restrictions stifle their voices from being heard by precluding them from organizing a protest. Social media laws also prohibit them from expressing their concerns or issues in wider social forum.

Generally, there is a lack of fact-base and honest discussion in news media regarding the sex offender issue. Meanwhile, few cases are hyped to bring about even harsher laws across the board in the registry. This only reflects the lack of freedom of press in a broader spectrum for people in the registry.

2nd Amendment – It is generally illegal for people with a felony to possess a firearm, which precludes them from exercising their constitutional right to protect themselves, their family, and their property using firearms.

3rd Amendment – N/A

4th Amendment – Apart from their regular sentences in incarceration, people convicted of a sex crime usually serve additional sentence in a form of Post Release Supervision for many years which is similar to probation. People who are in Post Release Supervision are subjected to any searches and seizures without the need for a warrant or a probable cause. This is apart from the sex offender registry itself which sets its own restrictions on a place of residence, work, social associations, etc.

5th Amendment – People who are in the Sex Offender Registry have already served their mandatory minimum sentence in incarceration. The registry, with its inherent restrictions and requirements, is a form of additional penalty. However, decades or even lifetime of additional punishment is not considered as a double jeopardy or a cruel & unusual punishment. This reflects gross injustice against them in the society.

Sex offenders are also subjected to become a witness against themselves (http://mynorthwest.com/244967/court-state-violated-fifth-amendment-rights-of-sex-offender-steven-powell/)

6th & 7th Amendments – The notion of sex crime is such that people are generally predisposed to crude preconceived notions regardless of a crime or whether any victim was involved. Sex offender registry has become so broad that petty offenses like public urination, public nudity, underage teenage consensual sex, underage teens having their nude photograph in their phone, adult consensual sex in a beach, etc. can all land someone in the sex offender registry (https://www.hrw.org/report/2007/09/11/no-easy-answers/sex-offender-laws-us). With the overwhelming negatively in the society, people labeled as sex offenders are more likely to be convicted in a trial and receive harsher judgment.

8th Amendment – Bail system in this country is a multi-billion dollar business, and bails are generally handed out in our courts like candies during Halloween. People accused of a sex crime are generally more likely to receive higher bonds due to fear and social stigma.

9th Amendment – Those who are in the sex offender registry are restricted to travel freely. They need prior notification and permission to travel. More restrictions are imposed upon those under supervision or probation.

In the states like Florida where sex offenders are marked in their driver’s license, they are more likely to face discrimination even in minor incident such as a routine traffic stop or while booking a hotel room. Also with the recent expansion of the International Megan Law, sex offender passports can be marked. This has opened new doors of restrictions or discrimination against sex offenders abroad, even physical harm to them and their families traveling with them.

10th – 27th Amendments – N/A, except for the infringement upon the right to vote in some States, especially those under probation or supervision.

Laws should be based on facts and not on fear, paranoia, or propaganda.
